As night falls on a Saturday in Plaza Miranda, the revered square in Quiapo, Manila becomes a vivid tableau of how people get by in these trying times, thanks to underground economy that seems to thrive when everyone's minding their budget. Life goes on indeed whatever adversaries may come.

Guests have left and so San Mig Light came amidst wind-swept skirt tables and high rises of Eastwood.

Beer is a good buddy. No emotional baggage to carry. No strings attached to pull. No what ifs. No what could have beens. Just plain good old company. Revery of sorts. As if I'm carefree and unaffected. Just keep it flowing and foaming.

Or else I'll be back to the realm of reality once my lips kiss my bottle its last.

Tie that binds

High school sophomore Anna Mae (left), 13, and her sister Grace Ann, 11, a grade four pupil, work on binding their notebooks with a yarn string - three days after the opening of this year's school year - at a commercial arcade in Sikatuna Village, Quezon City.

The sisters are underprivileged. Often this reporter would see them doing their homework not on their house but at the corner near where this picture was taken as their mother sells balut. The sisters would even be found sleeping on that corner.

These girls deserve better. It's up to us if we'd keep them tied down to the burden of a mismanaged country.
